The Millstream, Cambridge Road

Team Rating

Harry's Review

Hmmm, first MacMullen’s pub – oh well. The three of us rolled up together in the Maurice mobile. Beer was the standard AK, country or lagers/ciders. I went for a pint of Country which was OK quality wise.

The Millstream is an old pub, it is quite spacious inside, I’m guessing that at some stage it has been extended. The interior is furnished with dark wood and furniture and there are plenty of tables, the place appears to be clean.

The menu is standard pub fair with a specials board with a few extra dishes on. None of us fancied a starter so we went straight into the mains, I went for the wimp option of ham egg and chips. This was exactly what it said on the tin as the picture shows! The ham was hand cut, quite thick and lots of it. Two eggs, one runny which I prefer for chip dipping and one harder. Chips were chips and cooked OK. Overall not bad quality and cost reasonable at £7.50.

We were debating whether to have pud and I won the day! I went for the treacle sponge with ice cream. The portion when it arrived was a huge, good value at £3.85 and went down nicely!

One thing I will say is that the bar was well staffed and we were quickly served on our bar trips and the food arrived promptly when we ordered. There was a quiz night due to start so that might explain extra staff behind the bar, I don’t know if the service is always as good. The bar staff were friendly and the bar manager did make an effort to say goodbye as we left – small things that count and are appreciated!

Overall the Millstream provides fair quality mid range pub grub, the service was good and the venue quite acceptable. I wouldn’t go miles out of my way to eat there, but I certainly wouldn’t avoid it either.

Maurice's Review

I was hesitant about going to this one, but I have said that about a couple and been presently surprised. So my mind was open this time. I have had a few drinks here before and although a little pricey compared to some pubs it’s not a bad pub.
I would say The Millstream is what it is, a family pub. Nothing exciting no glitz and glamour, but sometimes it’s nice to be in a traditional environment. When I have been before the service has been slow, however in this instance the staff were very attentive and quick, so no complaints there.

Main: Mixed Grill £14.00

I had to laugh when ordering this as for an extra 80p I could have an extra egg. 80p seems a lot for an egg, but hey. Food arrived very quickly and first glance looked good, until I noticed I was steakless. However once this was pointed out the waitress it was on the plate in seconds.

The grill consisted of steak, sausage, chicken, pork chop, lamb chop, gammon, 1 egg, chips and veg. Overall it was all cooked well although the sausage was BBQ cremated and full of air lacking any real meat. They did however manage to make sure all the meats kept their individual flavours, which makes a nice change as sometimes they all taste the same. The only other thing I would say is all the meets were cut very thin, so if you go thinking “ahhhh mixed grill, but could I eat it all” the answer is “yes”.

 Desert: Eaton Mess £3.95

Love an eaten mess, and can’t normally go wrong, it’s just fruit in this case strawberries, cream and broken meringue. Although very nice to eat, disappointed this was sqwerty cream and ice-cream, but I am being picky, and for £4 good value.
